Artist Statement

Does anyone have the sheet of paper with the rough draft of our artist statement? It was on the black desk when 3 of us left for Home Depot.

I'll try to paraphrase it:

This structure is the common ground on which twelve projects for positive social change come together in a showing of unity. The purpose of these projects is to use the power that we possess as a group and as individuals to create a better world. The quote formed by grouping the twelve books is by Martin Luther King.

Info Graphic for Title Pages

Can we just use the image that Janet posted of all the covers as our info graphic? It may be low-res but it looks like the fastest solution for people who are finishing up their books. What do you guys think? Should the person's book that it is in be in color or just outlined stronger?

magnets

Our HUGE roll of magnet has arrived! Yaaayy :)
There's one thing though.. its really very heavy. Is anyone driving to the city on Thursday? If yes, then can i drop it off at your place on Wednesday night so that you can bring it? I can help you carry it upstairs once you get to the city.

let me know. Thanks!

Pinks. This time we'll get it.

Hey, I just checked with the guy at Pinks and he said if we have 4 (8.5x11) rub-down sheets to him over the noon hour tomorrow he can do them for Thursday. Please have the files laid out and completed by 11:00am just to be safe.

mission statements

I had asked for everybody's mission statements to be posted on the blog yesterday. So far only 5 people have posted theirs. We HAVE to get everybody's mission statement by tonight, so please do the needful if you havent already.

We're running out of time, I do understand that everybody must be busy with their other courses / individual books, but this is important too, especially since we are depending on an external supplier for getting the rubdowns on time.

This is a tough time and this too shall pass :) Godspeed...

final covers

I just got a response from Brody about the covers. He really likes the idea of tying in the title with the word on our covers (I'm sorry, I was the one opposed to it). I dont have the energy or the time to defend/ argue with him. Can we have a quick (emphasize "quick") show of hands for this one?

Just post your votes in the comments section with a Yes or No plus any other suggestions you might have.

Please no more calling me at work. I can't walk out of the office this much.

Need a cover decision

Okay, these covers need to be laid out or at least it try to do it. Supria has been kind enough to volunteer her efforts. If we can't come to a clear decision then everybody has to except what she creates. We need to have something on the covers of our books.

Book Covers

Hi guys,
I sent Brody the covers, but there hasnt been a reply from him. We cant wait any longer coz we'll have to lay everything out to make rubdowns.

Can we have a vote on the different cover designs?

Also can everybody please please post their mission statements on the blog, coz those will have to be made into rubdowns as well.

Everyone's Full Name Please

Can everyone comment with your full name as you would like it to appear on your book? Please put it next to your short name so that we don't get confused.

one more layout

This what I was sketching on class on Friday. Just a quick rough layout. If #2 has the majority votes, I'm all for it. But I do think we should pass it past Brody once.

Tonight's meeting

Hi everybody
We're meeting tonight at 6:30 pm. Here's what people need to bring in order for us to make the final decisions:

1. $28 – These are for the rubdowns that Trevor is going to be ordering.
2. 2 quotes. We will then pick the best one from the ones we have.
3. Thoughts for the mission statement.
4. Book cloth (Janet)
5. Magnets (Supriya)
6. Thoughts / ideas on individual book titles. These have to be decided today or latest by this weekend.
7. Books created for book arts class – the same ones you guys have been bringing to class.

Well.. thats it I guess. See you all this evening. And good luck for the final madness!

Here is what that quote looks like divided up using Helvetica Neue Extended Bold.

Power and Unity quote

Hey guys this one is short and sweet:

In union there is strength.
— Aesop

I think it hits power and connectivity dead-on. It implies change, but without saying change so that is one drawback.

Rubdowns

I'm going to go down to Pinks during my lunch break today and order a sample 4x5 rubdown that we can use to test on our book cloth. It looks like we can order any pantone color. I'll order the sample in silver, since that is what we had been discussing earlier. For the final rubdowns it costs $35 for each 8.5x11 piece. There is a 3 day turnaround, so we would need to order them this Friday or Monday. This means we need both the large quote and everybodies book titles by Friday.

Thanks.

Wood board

Janet and me went a woodcraft store today, they said they have 36 x 36 x 1.5 inch thick board in berkely store. we saw a small sample, it's really nice and polished. the thing is it's pretty expensive, cost $175...

hmm...or we can just get two boards from home depot and glue them together, it only cost about $30... what you guys think?

by the way...

How long is the screw on table leg?

What are the Dimensions of the Table? 34 x 34?

Quotes on Power

This site has a lot of power quotes:

http://www.wisdomquotes.com/cat_power.html

My personal favorite is: "We have learned that power is a positive force if it is used for positive purposes." ahhh, so warm and fuzzy

Rubdown sizes

It looks like we will need to get individual rubdowns for each of the books. The biggest size they mention on their site is 18"x24". We would need 33" x 33" to cover all of the books at once.

Table Materials

Wood board:

Particle board: 49 x 97 x 5/8 inch thick - $14.69

Fiber board: 49 x 97 x 3/4 inch thinck - $21.75

Metal sheet:

Galvanized flat sheet: 36 x 48 - $12.16

Plexiglas:

35 7/8 x 47 7/8 x 1/8 inch thick - $31.99

They will cut them for us, but we have to glue them together by ourself.

Boards

Hao Chiu, if the only thickness we can get is 1" then we can always get shorter screws for the table legs. See if they will cut the boards and glue them together for you. If they can glue two 1" boards together so that it looks nice, that would be great. If not just buy a single 1" board.

Did they have sheet metal and thin plexiglas?
We want to have as many materials as possible on Thursday, so we can see how this will all come together.

Magnets

I spoke to a person at Master Magnetics Inc. in Anaheim and explained our project to him. He shipping us a set of samples of different magnets/ materials today.
Thankfully they arent going to be charging us for these samples.

Paper Samples

I went to Kelly Paper and got a few paper samples for the inside pages of our book. I didnt find anything that would be suitable for the outer cover. Perhaps I should check at Flax or Arch.
